Predicting college football’s all-time top 10 wins leaders after 2022

[ad_1]

No school has accumulated more wins in the history of college football than the Michigan Wolverines. And no matter what happens during the 2022 season, nothing is going to change that. The Wolverines will enter and end the 2022 college football season with a firm lead on every other school when it comes to counting up all-time wins. In fact, the Wolverines are inching closer and closer to being the first 1,000-game winner in the sport, although that goal will have to wait at least one more season.

But by the end of the 2022 season, there could very well be a new member of college football’s top 10 all-time wins leaderboard with the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs on the doorstep of the No. 10 position in the all-time rankings. The Bulldogs could even move as far up as No. 9 from their current position, No. 11.

A couple of ties within the top 10 could be broken this season as the top 10 shuffles its order a little bit. Alabama and Ohio State are currently tied for No. 2 on the all-time wins list according to Winsipedia, each with 942 wins entering the 2022 season. Oklahoma and Texas are tied with 928 all-time wins, with the Sooners and Longhorns each one win behind Notre Dame’s all-time mark of 929.

Penn State recently moved ahead of Nebraska within the all-time top 10 and enters the upcoming season with a one-game lead on the Huskers, 909 to 908. But Tennessee and USC, each with 856 all-time wins, are each seeing Georgia pull up quickly in the rearview mirror with 853 wins and counting.

So let’s take a look at what the top 10 all-time wins list will look like at the end of the 2022 season. To do so, we’ll take the rolling five-year average of wins, round down to the nearest whole, and add that to each school’s current all-time mark. To keep things even, we’ll even toss out the 2020 season from the calculations. If the law of averages plays out, what will the top 10 look like at the end of the season?

1. Michigan, 985 wins

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 976

Best possible win total after 2022: 991 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 976 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 9.8

No matter what happens, nobody will be catching Michigan this year, or next year, and possibly the year after that. Michigan’s lead in all-time victories remains firm for now.

2. Alabama, 955 wins

Kyle Robertson-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 942

Best possible win total after 2022: 957 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 942 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 13

Given Alabama’s recent track record, it is a fair assumption to say Alabama is going to win a good number of games this season. The Crimson Tide have won an average of 13 games per season for the past five years, excluding the 2020 season, which is impressive because most schools will play 13 games a season if they are lucky! Alabama hasn’t won fewer than 10 games in a season since 2007, Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa.

3. Ohio State, 954 wins

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 942

Best possible win total after 2022: 957 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 942 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 12

As impressive as Alabama has been with its winning ways, Ohio State hasn’t been too far behind. The Tide just has a few more national titles to show for it, including one national championship victory over the Buckeyes (although Ohio State started the playoff era with a national title that took Alabama out along the way). But if the law of averages holds true, Alabama will break its tie with Ohio State this season. Could the tie even be broken in a head-to-head matchup for the national title?

4. Notre Dame, 939 wins (tie)

Melina Myers-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 929

Best possible win total after 2022: 943 (14-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 929 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 10.8

The Fighting Irish begin a new era in South Bend under new head coach Marcus Freeman. After five consecutive seasons of double-digit win totals, and six in the last seven years, we should probably still expect Notre Dame to win a good amount of games this season. Of course, the Irish lack the possibility of playing in a conference championship, which could help one of the top names in the Big 12 looming behind them in the all-time wins list catch the Irish and move ahead.

4. Oklahoma, 939 wins (tie)

Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 928

Best possible win total after 2022: 943 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 928 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 11.6

Oklahoma may be the most intriguing name to keep tabs on within the top 10 his season as they are one of two programs with a new head coach. The perennial Big 12 favorites will have a new head coach in Brent Venables but the expectations are still high for the Sooners. But if you had to pick a team most likely to fly under their five-year average, Oklahoma may be your first pick. But if the averages do continue to hold steady, then Oklahoma will move into a tie with Notre Dame.

6. Texas, 935 wins

Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 928

Best possible win total after 2022: 943 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 928 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 7

Texas is locked in a tie with their biggest rival on the all-time wins list, but we are trending toward that tie being broken as Texas falls a bit farther behind the top schools on this list. But, no matter what happens this season, Texas is guaranteed to still be in the top six of the all-time wins list. It will be impossible for the next team on the list to catch them even if the Longhorns go a full season without a win.

7. Penn State, 918 wins

Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 909

Best possible win total after 2022: 924 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 909 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 9.8

The last two seasons have seen Penn State floating at the .500 mark, a trend down from the 11 win seasons Penn State had in three of the previous four seasons before the pandemic hit. Which Penn State shows up his season remains to be seen, but a nine-win season could be tough to reach. But if the Nittany Lions hit their average over the past five non-pandemic seasons, then Penn State could create some breathing room with another Big Ten program.

8. Nebraska, 913 wins

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 908

Best possible win total after 2022: 923 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 908 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 5

If there is a team in the all-time top 10 wins list in desperate need of turning things around, it is Nebraska. The Cornhuskers have been slumping in the wins category for far too long and have not had a winning record since 2016. Five wins won’t please too many Nebraska fans this season, but that would be par for the course over the past handful of seasons.

9. Georgia, 864 wins

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Current win total: 853

Best possible win total after 2022: 868 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 853 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 11.6

The biggest change in the top 10 leaderboard in college football’s all-time wins list could very likely come from Georgia. The Bulldogs have established a solid track record that suggests double-digit win totals are the new norm in Athens. Just hitting 10 wins could end up moving Georgia into the top 10, but 11 will almost certainly make up the necessary ground needed to get into the top 10.

10. USC, 863 wins

Current win total: 856

Best possible win total after 2022: 871 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 856 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 7.6

There is rejuvenated energy in the USC football program this season with the addition of new head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback transfer Caleb Williams, both from Oklahoma. But how much will USC be ready to turn things around in the first year under Riley? Will it be enough to hold off Georgia from passing them on the all-time wins list? After a couple of mediocre seasons for the Trojans, all they have to do is hit their average to stay in the top 10. The real race may come down to USC and another SEC East school for the final spot in the top 10.

Tennessee, 862 (falling out)

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

Current win total: 856

Best possible win total after 2022: 871 (15-0)

Worst possible win total after 2022: 856 (0-12)

Rolling five-year average win total: 6.6

Tennessee may have to turn in a stellar season to hold off SEC East rival Georgia on the all-time wins list. But recent history suggests Georgia should be expected to pick up more wins than the Vols, perhaps including one at the expense of Tennessee along the way. The Vols could hold off Georgia, and if they do it will likely be a terrific season in Knoxville.
