Farragut girls basketball guard Avery Strickland announced her commitment to Pittsburgh after a tumultuous recruiting process.
“So excited for this new chapter in my life!! #committed,” Strickland wrote Monday on Twitter.
The 6-foot-1 Strickland was previously committed to West Virginia and signed with the Mountaineers in November, but after taking official visits to campus, she requested and received a release.
Pitt made Strickland an offer on Jan. 21, the day after her release was granted.
“There were just some cultural things (at West Virginia) that I didn’t really fit in with and just the values up on the chain,” Strickland said after her release was granted. “I took that as a red flag, but I was like, it’s fine, I know it’s college, we’ll get through this. I ended up signing, and I got to go up again. I prayed about it … and then God told me like, this is not the place you’re supposed to be.”
During the 2021-22 season, Strickland led Farragut to its first state tournament and state championship appearances in program history, and the Admirals finished runners-up to rival Bearden in Class 4A. She averaged 17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
Pitt finished the season 11-19, losing to Duke in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Strickland will bring much-needed size to the roster — she would be the second-tallest player on the 2021-22 team.
