Skimboarding As a Fun Sport to Improve Your Fitness

Skimming is done by standing on the board as it glides across the surface of the shallow water on the beach. Tricks like ollies, fistral turns and shove ins are often performed by novices and more experienced boarders alike.

If you love spending time on the beach and are looking for a fun way to get some exercise, then skimboarding is the sport for you. It is a full body work out that works every muscle in your body, increasing your strength and stamina.

This sport can also be played across wet sand, which is ideal for beginners trying to perfect their technique. It is a great way to get together a group of friends to enjoy exercise without the feeling of having to slog through a boring gym routine.

A technique known as flatland skimming requires that you stand on your board and ride it towards shore on the outgoing waters of the previous wave break. The best time to do this is at low tide when the beach is most exposed.

Your first challenge with this sport will be learning how to step onto the moving board once you have thrown it down to skim across the waters surface. Once you master this technique you can move on to more difficult tricks.

A popular manoeuvre is known as the Wrap, which involves learning how to twist your body and shift your weight so that as you hit a wave, you turn yourself and your board to ride the wave back to shore. More advanced skimmers can actually ride the barrel of the wave into shore.
